Chief Marshal Savaged By Rogue Barrel

Having worked very hard to ensure the success of the Ksport Tarmac Stages at Avon Park, Chief Marshal Dave Wild missed the final stage runs and awards ceremony after he was the victim of a savage attack by a plastic barrel marking the course on one of the stages.

Standing just off the road, he took a precautionary step backwards as an approaching competitor started to get out of shape. Missing his footing he started to fall backwards and received a severe blow on his left arm from the barrel which had launched itself at him with assistance from the competitors car.

Obviously in severe pain he was treated on the spot by the event doctor and one of the rescue crews before being taken to Bournemouth hospital for treatment. After an X-ray there was a very long wait before he was assessed as only suffering bruising and apparently as sane as any motor sport enthusiast.

Delivered into the tender mercies of Vanessa Linley and Chrissie Chorley, he was returned to Avon Park where arrangements were made to get him and his car home.

Colin Early, Clerk of the Course, and his team produced an imaginative and well run event which received well deserved praise from competitors. Sponsors Ksport have already indicated their support for 2000 and the event is earmarked for inclusion in next years ACSMC Tarmac championship.
