Well, its that time of year when the fair weather(!) autotesters and triallists start looking for other ways to get their cars dirty - and that means waking up the navigators and getting out into the lanes on the Scatter and 12-car rallies. We have do have a bumper crop this year - see the calendar below - but remember that the list isn't necessarily definitive, do check with the organisers &/or your Competition Secretary first. Croydon's Scatter on 27th Sept has taken place with eleven crews out, including some of the aforementioned autotester novices, but it rained so much that by the time most people had got home, all the lovely back-lane mud had been washed off! Only one crew didn't make the finish but the rest had a good time doing a somewhat unusual scatter. Thank you Frank Collins! The first 7Oaks scatter event is on 11th Oct and will be a more conventional, but still very straightforward, run around the lanes of Kent starting from the Bell at Kemsing. Borough 18's half-night 12-car rally is on Friday 20th October and Blackpalfrey have a scatter date for 25th October, albeit without specific details. These scatters are a great opportunity to make a start in rallying - you need little more than a relevant OS map, pencils, a roamer, torch and ideally a maplight in the car. Even new stage rally types would be wise to have a bash - including the drivers - as it is important to understand just what a navigator/co-driver has to do. Nicky Grist, Gwyndaf Evans and others started this way and they've done pretty well. We are compiling a list of email addresses from all interested members of the Weald clubs, to which we send up to date calendars and event details. Anyone interested please email us at andyelcomb@yahoo.com . You won't get any spam we promise - just pure club motorsport info. That's all for now, hope to see a few more new faces this rally season.
