Motorsport mourns the loss of Harvey Postlethwaite - 1944-1999
Beginning his motor sport career by racing a Mallock, Harvey Postlethwaite soon concentrated on the technical aspects of the sport, landing a job with March before moving into F1 with Hesketh Racing, then onto Wolf before joining Ferrari at Maranello where Postlethwaite designed cars, gained two manufacturers' championships during his eight year spell with the team
A spell with Tyrrell followed before he returned to Ferrari for a relatively unsuccessful spell by his standards. In 1993 he returned to Tyrrell as engineering director.
With the sale of Tyrrell to BAR he then moved to Honda to head up its test and development team for its planned re-entry to F1.
Postlethwaite was an innovator in terms of F1 design. From rubber spring suspension on the Hesketh, through raised noses, anhedral wings to hydrolink suspension and semi-automatic gearboxes, he was always at the forefront of his chosen field. His commitment to F1 was also reflected in his role on the F1 technical Commission's safety committee, where he worked to improve driver safety.
