Le Huitieme Rallye Des Pas Des Dittons
The renowned, or should it be re-footed Rallye des Pas des Ditton, or Thames Ditton Foot Rally for those not in the know, has been put back into the rallying calendar - on Saturday 4th August. Last organised in 1993, this magnificent event is again "run" to raise funds for the Children's Trust, Tadworth. It has been resurrected from the annals of well-forgotten history in an effort to give the world's rallyistes some valuable stage miles due to the cancellation of so many competitions this summer.
"The event is run very much tongue in cheek, intending to emulate a proper rally and offers a huge amount of fun and frolics for all concerned. Having not run it for seven years, we were suffering from the seven-year itch and we felt it would be appropriate to revive this most successful fund raising event for the usual beneficiaries," said Rob Arthur, one half, along with Rick Smith of Le Management.
Le Huitieme Rally des Pas des Ditton will be a true rally except that four feet are needed instead of a car. The two-person or four feet teams, after completing the day's gruelling special stages and tests, passage and time controls (all in pubs), will be rewarded by an embarrassment of wholly inappropriate prizes at the Grand Prize Giving at The Old Cranleighans Rugby Club.
The usual blend of baffling regulations, spot fines and stomach-churning concoctions dreamed up by the organisers generally ensures that only those with the strongest constitutions finish the day in full possession of their breakfast.
A cheapish entry fee includes all management plates, road books and a BBQ lunch. A local hotel has been coerced into providing reasonable accommodation rates, plus there are parties planned for both Friday and Saturday nights. Entries are encouraged from all national one-make championships, as are ANCRO, BTRDA, BRC, WRC rally championship contenders. Fancy dress entries and extra sponsorship will be specially rewarded with some particularly tasteless prizes. Of course, there are some very tasteful prizes on offer for those raising the most sponsorship, either as an individual or as a team.
New Licence Laws For UK Rallying
The MSA is to introduce new regulations for issuing new stage licences in the UK, this should ensure safer clubman rallying in the UK.
British Association of Rally Schools (BARS) is undergoing an expansion and development programme to cope with the new requirements for stage rally driver licences in the UK. Under the new regulations a new licence applicant will have to undergo an approved training course before being able to compete.
This new Stage Rally Driver competition licence will be introduced on 1st January 2002, the 'starter pack' and mandatory attendance at an approved rally school make the scheme. This will thus be very similar to those already running successfully for race and kart drivers.
Whilst this will increase the cost of getting into Rallying slightly, it should mean that all licence holders are more committed to competing, and that when that first event does
