Brooklands MuseumMotorsport Day 98 |

Saturday March 14thOnce again Brooklands Museum is putting on a Motorsport Day prior to the start of the main Motorsport season in aid of the charity "BEN". The main part of the day is the Auction of Motorsport memorabilia and Motorsport related items, chaired by Tiff Needell and Murray Walker. Last year this auction raised over £31,000 for the charity "Ben". In addition to the auction, there is a wide variety of Motorsport vehicles both Old and "State of the Art" New. Displays from Jordan F1, Penske, Toyota are often popular covering everything from Racing cars to Rally Cars, Go-Karts to Motorbikes. Every year this day gets bigger and bigger, with even more exhibitors, so there is something for everyone. Brooklands is the birthplace of Motorsport and Southern Car Club are there again this year, as an even bigger partner to the museum in putting on a spectacular display. Last year Neil Cloughley was asked to organise a small rally demonstration as part of the day. Southern Car Club, ever keen to help a charitable organisation, fully organised this demonstration just one week after the Bournemouth Winter Rally. This year however, we have a 2 week gap and have had a lot longer to organise our part of the day. Neil started organising the rally demonstration just before Christmas 97, and this year has enlisted the help of Ian Harden, himself now a "Hardened!" competitor (excuse the pun). Having learned from last year that the crowd needs to be near the cars, the far end of the runway will not be used, although several Italian sports cars will be putting on a demonstration there. Instead, a shorter course of 2 laps making up a 1.5 mile mini-stage will be used. This will enable the crowd to be no more than 100 yards from the action at any one point on the course, if all three designated spectator areas are used. The course has been approved by the Museum, giving Motorsport access to the famed "banking" once again at Brooklands. It has been a long time coming, but competitive Motorsport is returning to its rightful birthplace. The plan for the day and our input as a car club now follows : Southern Car Club Display and Demonstration on behalf of Brooklands MuseumFirstly, on behalf of Neil, Ian, and the Museum, many thanks for all the offers of help for this day. This year (if the weather is kind) should prove to be the best yet. British Rally Championship and Works Peugeot Rally Driver Justin Dale will display either the Brand New Peugeot 106 Maxi or his Challenge spec 306. There will also be 11 Southern Car Club Rally drivers taking part in the display with a wide range of machinery, from Subarus to Metros, Minis and Dam 4100s, to Astras and Peugeots. The course has been designed to be good for spectating and equally rewarding to drive. Although not that long, all crews should get at least 5 runs at the course, hopefully more. A note to those crews taking part, please confirm your place to Neil on 0181 545 0055(w) before 11/03/98. Those crews competing should be advised that the course is 95% sealed tarmac so it is suggested that any scrap tarmac tyres you have should be used
Once again many thanks to all those involved, your help is greatly appreciated and will make this the best Motorsport Day so far. We still require Marshals and Display Unit people to help promote the club - warm drinks will be provided! Please speak to Brian Hugh on 0181 462 4004 if you could help in one of the above roles. All other enquiries please call Neil 0181 545 0055 (daytime) See you there! |
