Competitors' Round-up

December 1997

Rob Arthur
was out with Jimmy McRae on the RAC in an A6 Hyundai ("Hope You Understand Nothing's Driveable And Inexpensive") Accent, achieving the unusual result of finishing exactly where they started, 32nd.

Lee Earnshaw
was out with Mike Bedwell on the Spotted Dick and Custard stages and took his now customary (custardomary?) class win in the trusty Alfa.

Ellya Gold/Ian Harden
Competed at Oxford Motor Club's Carfax Stages at Longcross on 7 December. After a very cautious first stage they made steady progress in slippery conditions to finish 26th. overall and 13th. in class against some very fast opposition. It was also their first rally with a proper service crew, and they would like to thank Neil Cloughley, Simon Catling and Mike Weeks for their welcome help during the day.

Tony Jardine
was also out on the RAC but his run finished on SS22 with "suspension damage". What horrible moment led to this, we can only imagine.

John O'Donnell
ended up driving the RAC while Jo Brand opted for the less vertigo-inducing task of running around with the cameras. Mike Jones partnered him to 89th overall, with an elapsed time of 6hrs and 1 minute. I always say that we clubmen get much better value out of our entries - Colin only had 3hrs 54 minutes of fun. (ps a Frenchman who finished well behind John had a further 30 minutes of fun, which probably involved a certain amount of pushing by his copilote.)

Richard Phillipson/Catherine Phillipson
DNF'd on the RAC when they broke a driveshaft on SS12. The word "gutted" was truly invented for rallying.

For club members to get your news in here, talk to Richard Phillipson on club night, call on 0181 947 3800 or send an email to cdoherty@gartmore.com.
