Competitors' Round-up

August 1997

Roger Binyon
was out on the always-excellent Azimghuir Stages at Colerne. He was lying 1st overall when 4th gear went... then another gear... and another. So it's time for a new gearbox and a suspension of competition plans until September/October while he saves up...

John Blaber/Alan Jamieson
finished the Kayel 28th overall and 6th in class. However, successful protests from competitors who had been baulked behind someone with a puncture on the dusty first stage pushed them back to 33rd and 7th in class. They lost 1½ minutes on the last stage when the steering rack came very close to falling off. Their next outing is the Trackrod in September.

Graham Davey
did well on the Car-Nival Grass Autotest in his Rover to come 6th in absolute time and 2nd overall, even though some of the tests were very tight.

Justin Northage
had a very successful outing to the Ulster rally, coming 3rd in class by just one second. He is now 3rd in N3 in the British Open, which considering that he missed the first round is pretty good. He will of course miss out on the bonus points for starting all rounds, so he is unlikely to improve on this position, but the season has been good experience.

Sue Orchard/Graham Morris
thought the Jim Clark was "brilliant" - see separate article. Their next outing is the Mewla in the Clio, then Wexford in the turquoise Metro.

Richard Phillipson/Catherine Phillipson
won their class on the Quinton. Their terrible organisational skills resulted in their usual crew not realising they were doing the event till 24 hours before scrutineering!

James Potter
was out with a navigator who shall remain anonymous on the Quinton. The navigator was breezily confident that it was possible to call the bends from the rather over-enlarged maps in the road book - the resulting confusion probably cost them about a second per mile. Despite the difficulty of getting the power down in the wet, they still finished a good second in class.

Team Fortnight (Colin & Michael Weeks)
have had two DNFs in a rather unsuccessful three months - see separate article. Their next events are:

Aug 24 Sutton & Cheam Hillside PCT at Camerons Field, Dorking.
Open to ALL Southern Car Club Members
Sep 7 SODC Deerstalker Trial at Eddlesborough, Beds.
ACSMC Round
Sep 21 Maidstone & Mid Kent's trial at Chegworth Court, Kent.
Dual Permit ACSMC Round

Richard Worts
is aiming to do the Manx and RAC although like Sue Orchard, pressure of work is putting a lot of strain on recce times
